In collaboration with Information Systems Laboratories, the Multiple Input-Multiple Output (MIMO) capabilities were demonstrated on Telephonics’ X-band production radar and enabled simultaneous adaptive clutter cancellation and monopulse angle estimation in a small, two-phase center antenna, previously only feasible in four-phase centers. By transforming a small, electronically scanned antenna (ESA) into a much larger virtual array, MIMO capabilities enable expanding roles for smaller, Cost, Size, Weight and Power (C-SWaP) constrained platforms such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).
The Telephonics Advantage
Successfully developed and flight tested a MIMO-based variant on a Telephonics X-band radar
Real-world data validated performance
Unlike phased array radar which transmits a scaled version of the same waveform, MIMO radar employs waveform diversity to enable superior performance in a number of key areas
Additional Benefits
Higher bearing accuracy for the same array size
Ability to detect slower-moving targets
With slight modification can adopt adaptive array techniques developed for Single Input -Multiple Output (SIMO) radar including:
Space Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) to cancel clutter
