Telephonics Reports Successful Results from U.S. Army Sponsored Degraded Visual Enviornment Testing Event
Telephonics Announces Successful DVE Results
Press Releases on June 17, 2015
-
Telephonics Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Griffon Corporation (NYSE: GFF), announced today that it has completed its analysis of results gathered at the U.S. Army-sponsored Degraded Visual Environment (DVE) test event held at the Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona in February 2015. The Yuma Proving Ground tests were conducted to demonstrate a variety of sensor solutions designed to assist pilots when encountering DVE conditions, including weather, sand, dust and brownout, during takeoff and landing.
Telephonics’ Test Demonstrator Radar, which operates in Ka-Band frequency (at ~ 35 GHz), performed exceptionally well during the test events with minimal effects to radar performance during brownout conditions. Telephonics subject matter experts believe that Ka-Band offers an ideal balance between overall system performance and brownout/weather penetration, making it well suited for DVE conditions.
During testing, the 35 GHz Test Demonstrator Radar was mounted on an elevated, 50 ft. telescoping tower, similar to the height of an aircraft approaching a landing zone. The radar was evaluated in both clear conditions, to establish baseline performance, and brownout conditions created by a low-flying EH-60L helicopter. Obstacles of various types and sizes, both fixed and moving, were used to create several hazardous landing zones. In addition to the radar system, Telephonics’ sensor suite included a long-wave infrared camera and an optical camera. Data from all three sensors was then used to provide a real-time display of objects in these landing zones.
These results support the designed intent of the system, which is to enable aviators to effectively navigate through sand, dust and other brownout conditions at longer ranges, leading to increased safety and mission success. Navigating through these reduced visibility conditions creates a tactical advantage for commanders and military aviators.
In addition to the Yuma Proving Ground event, the system has also undergone extensive successful testing at Telephonics’ Farmingdale, N.Y. facility, detecting both manmade and natural obstacles as well as terrain features in dense fog, snow and whiteout conditions.
“Maintaining the safety of our Armed Forces during dangerous missions is a key factor when developing our advanced technologies, and the need for an effective radar sensor is critical as our military often faces life threating conditions caused by DVE” said Joseph J. Battaglia, President and Chief Executive Officer of Telephonics. “The results from the Yuma Proving Ground DVE test show that a radar sensor operating in Ka-Band at 35 GHz is an effective and affordable solution to the DVE problem.”
